CONCENTRATION AREAS
North Pacific and North Atlantic gyres (huge vortex of currents with thousands kilometres of diameter) are well known for being responsible for accumulation of macro and micro-debris in their middle. In the Mediterranean sea, similar currents at a lower scale (vortex) and water mass convergence areas are potential hydrological structures which are likely to aggregate marine debris.
From repeated measurements each year, particularly in the occidental basin, the aim is to assess the possible presence of such areas. Vortex and water convergence are also known for being feeding areas for many marine populations.
