WASTES ASPECT

Field data are essential for environmental research and oceanography. To achieve the specific aims of the programme, data collection will be ensured aboard Halifax, a vessel platform dedicated to campaigns at sea.

Samples and measurements account for an invaluable material for partner laboratories to the expedition. They will allow to particularly progress in the pollution characterisation by microplastic in the Mediterranean sea. This pollution which raises many environmental questions will be explored for the first time in the Mediterranean through those surveys.

The following questions will be investigated especially :

1-   What is the level of pollution by microplastics on the Mediterranean sea?

2-   Are there some specific areas that aggregate microplastics at sea surface?

3-   How much Myctophidae fish (a fish species a key role in marine ecosystems) ingest microplatics in the Mediterranean sea?

4-   How can currentology models predict transport and dispersion of floatting debris, petrol layers and jellyfish swarms ?
