FOOD CHAIN CONTAMINATION

Myctophidae fish (also named lantern-fish because of their bio-luminescence at night, see the photographs on the right) are very important species for all the marine ecosystem all around the world. Living under hundred metres of the surface during the day, myctophidae are feeding at night near the surface.

Plastic ingestion by this fish have been proved by several scientific campaigns in the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. These animals are the preys for tunas, swordfishes, birds and marine mammals in a small food chain. That’s why this is important to estimate how much they consume microplastics as they can be considered as bio-indicators for this issue.

Individual captured in several areas will allow to analyze their stomach content.
